Official Pregame Rant
I've been railing about this all day, but it's just killing me. Now as Tom Caron and Dennis Eckersley hype up the game, I figure I'll psych myself up by posting this here.
Normally I don't follow the Yankees too closely unless we're playing them. So the past 48 hours have been a violent re-introduction to the Yankees, the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, and how much I utterly fucking hate the Yankees.
Call me jealous, say it's sour grapes, say it's misdirected frustration, tell me I have Stockholm Syndrome, whatever. The reason I hate the Yankees as a franchise is not because they win all the time. It's not even because they have such a bloated payroll. It's not because they're the Sox's division rival and that's what I'm supposed to do. All of that goes into my Yankees-hatred, but alone add up to perhaps a strong irritation, maybe even an intense dislike.
No, what puts me over the top into hatred is the kind of thing that happened this morning, when the New York Post quoted George Steinbrenner as saying, of the upcoming series, "it's payback time."
Payback for what? For sweeping them in April? Oh, please.
How about payback for their dirty dealings with the Jose Contreras signing (although one could argue that his performance, or lack thereof, has been payback enough)? How about payback for A-Rod? Clemens? Boggs? Anyone? Anyone? Where do I go for my reparations for those things?
How about payback for Ramiro Mendoza?
How about payback for Game 7? How about payback for stomping our bullpen groundskeepers? How about payback for 1978 and 1999? How about payback for all those "1918" posters and pictures of Grady Little's face on the bleacher walls?
How about payback for every insufferable Yankees fan who thinks he's better because his team wins? How about payback for Derek Jeter's smug, smiling face everywhere?
Hhow about payback for ruining the competitiveness of baseball, especially in our division? Hhow about payback for fielding an All-Star team with a $200 million budget, gloating when you win, and then saying, of a $125 million team or any other team for that matter, "it's payback time"?
The way I see it, Georgie Porgie, if anyone owes, it's you.
