What's the opposite of a Polyanna?
Tom Caron and Sam Horn are talking about how we have to be happy about this homestand. They're saying things that make a lot of sense about how we need to focus on the 56 runs we scored in the past week and the 5 - 1 homestand that just ended.
But whatever the opposite of a Polyanna is, that's what I'm being.
This sucks. It sucks that we lost this game when I felt from the very beginning we'd win, and sweep not just the Texas series but the entire homestand. It sucks that we lost when we brought in Pokey to pinch-run and Manny to pinch-hit and were rewarded with a pop-up and a pickoff.
It sucks because it's the kind of game the Yankees always seem to win, and the kind we need to figure out how to win if we're ever going to beat them.
It was a great homestand, and there's a lot to feel good about. But for the fourth straight year, we go into the All-Star Break firmly ensconced in second place. For the fourth straight year, we're already thinking wild card by July. And the team that represents the biggest threat to us for that, Texas, just beat us in a gut-wrencher today, leaving us with that nasty taste before a week off.
To quote Rick Patino, it sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. And it stinks.
So, if this were a movie, this would be the part where the soundtrack goes, Dun dun DUNNN!!!
What will happen when we return after these messages from our sponsor? Will Keith Foulke regain his mojo? Will Manny continue being Mr. Personality? Will Nomar stay or walk out with a "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"? Will Derek Lowe's multiple personalities continue to plague him?
Find out next time as we greet our heroes once more in...The Second Half!!
