Hello. Yes. I'm still alive. I've managed to crawl out from under a creaking pile of work to at least hit on the most salient points in sports news for the past week, complete with convenient boldfaced headings for those of you as busy as I am.
Matter the first: Theo
The Sox waited until the absolute last possible moment to announce they've reached a new three-year deal with Theo Epstein . In general, my thoughts on the matter have already been written about . Future of the franchise, etc. etc. But... Were negotiations really that tough? Or was it all simply a ploy to hang on to what marketing types call "mind share" in the Boston press? Another question: which would be worse? The idea that HWL actually hemmed and hawed about signing Theo, something akin to the Krafts scratching their heads about whether or not to franchise Tom Brady? Or the idea that the whole stupid thing was a stunt? Either way, I'm fairly angry with them right now. Am I happy Theo's signed? Yes. But the idea of not signing him is so ridiculous and would be so mind-bogglingly idiotic that I consider having had to worry about it at all an affront. This was a no-brainer, folks. The bare minimum. Why did it take till the very last day?
Matter the second: Manny
Then there's Mannygate: chapter 853. I find it humorous that at least some of my fellow Sox fans have been blase about the Theo situation, and yet continue to get sucked into the never ending middle-school-esque drama that is Manny.
I believe I've reached Manny Fatigue. At least the idea of not re-signing our GM was a freshly horrifying prospect. Personally, I've done all the "processing" it is possible to do on the possibility of losing Manny. If we keep him, great. That's some serious power and RBI contribution in our lineup, and the chance that Big Papi won't be intentionally walked four times a game. If we don't, great. That's one less asshole in the clubhouse with some stupid prima donna bullshit crying "racism" about the fact that Boston loves Schilling. And frankly, it scares me to imagine how many different kinds of out of control Manny might be in said clubhouse without his personal babysitter of the last two years in Kevin Millar.
But mostly, I just want something to happen. The Manny storyline has been done to death. I've had it. Just do something already, and let us never speak of it again.
Matter the Third: Tedy
Meanwhile, was anyone else as horrified by this photo of Tedy Bruschi as I was? He looks like he's lost about 150 pounds since last we saw him. He looks haggard in that photo. Reports are that he was fine last night, and other photos show him looking much healthier--if still substantially lighter. Obviously he'll need more time to get back into playing shape, and from what I can tell, he was his old exuberant self last night.
But still...I'm kind of pissed about this, too, in a way that's somewhat similar to the Theo situation--fuck you for making me worry so much. Only, with Tedy, I'm not as sure exactly who to take issue with.
Oh, and the Patriots juuuust managed to rally back against the Bills last night. And there was much rejoicing.
