Do I dare report this?
ABC News apparently was first with the story--my dad called me just a little while ago after seeing a little ticker come up on his TV screen while watching Dancing With Celebrities that said "Theo's back". Then he called again after seeing a scrolling text that said "Theo Epstein to rejoin Red Sox as director of operations, more details next week."
According to the story posted on ABC's website:
"Ironically, Theo's departure has brought us closer together in many respects, and, thanks to these conversations, we now enjoy the bonds of a shared vision for the organizations future that did not exist on October 31. With this vision in place, Theo will return to the Red Sox in a full-time baseball operations capacity, details of which will be announced next week."
The statement came from Epstein, principal owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner, president Larry Lucchino and Epstein.
Reports that Lucchino's role would be diminished to lure Epstein back were not true, Henry said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.
"Larry's role does not change," he said. "Details next week."
I don't even know how to react right now...on the one hand, I said I'd give anything for Theo to come back, and I damn well meant it. But am I ready to jump up and down and celebrate? Not yet. I'm probably (okay, definitely) the party pooper here...but I'm still not ready to let my guard down on this. I want to wait and see what this really means...and I DEFINITELY want the scoop on why they jerked us around for lo these two and a half months. As JimSchortz said on the SGMB, "what this does is it shows that the Sox are pretty dysfunctional. There better be some serious air-clearing going on."
Keep checking back for updates. Hopefully that air-clearing will happen, and happen soon.
