I thought Red's post yesterday was pitch-perfect. The way it began, "Hey God. Red here." Casual, nonchalant. "Hey God? Please spare us. You know, if you have a minute." I had a very similar feeling. A feeling of resignation, but with the tiniest spark of hope still struggling somewhere. Not hope for the division or the Wild Card or the playoffs or the season, but hope for good moments that may still be left in the remaining games--hope that the Yankees won't sweep us (thanks to yesterday's first game, they won't), hope that we can keep them from clinching this weekend (one win today will do that). The goals keep getting smaller and smaller. Our bargaining chips with the Almighty keep shrinking. Just don't let them sweep us. Granted. Okay, we say, inching forward just a little further, just don't let them clinch with us on the field. It remains to be seen if even that is too much to ask.
But from what I can see, Red Sox Nation has been reduced but not eliminated. We may be frustrated but we are still present. We still care. People say many things about Red Sox fans, but one thing, across the board, is clear: we are some stubborn-assed people.
Season is over, but I still watch the games, still hope for a win each time, thank god for 2004 or I would be really suicidal.
