Yeah. I kind of can't believe it either.
So of course I did the first thing I always do in situations like this, which is to call my Dad. He is not pleased. He's already an inveterate hater of Manny Ramirez; having Randy Moss on his hands now means his agita-plate will be more than full in the coming season. At least it wasn't Terrell Owens--that's about the only silver lining for him right now.
In the space of a few minutes, my dad was reviewing the mooning incident, the "I'll play when I wanna" attitude from Minnesota, and apparently an incident where he ran over a traffic cop, leading me to finally sarcastically suggest that we become fans of another team at this point if it was really going to be that much of an issue.
Which, of course, led my dad to ackowledge once again the immense natural talent we got in Moss for a bargain price--at least he's not a shitbrick and a dud as a player. When he wants to play, that is. Dammit. This is hard.
Curiously, the Patriots have also selected Brandon Meriweather, a safety out of the University of Miami (of Catholics. vs. Convicts fame) who has his own share of "character issues", including a gun incident that's somewhat open to debate and, more worryingly for me, his stomping of another player during the infamous Miami vs. Florida International fight last year (Meriweather is no. 19).
I'm of two minds right now about all this. I've drunk deeply enough of the Bill Belichick Kool-Aid to believe he has a definite idea in mind with these moves (especially since we still need a linebacker). But I will admit right now I couldn't even speculate as to what it is.
P.S. Reading this definitely helped me take my mind off things:
Before a 2003 Lowell Spinners game against the Staten Island Yankees, Papelbon volunteered to face Karstens in the competition. Although he had never milked a cow before, he represented the Red Sox well by defeating his counterpart.
“It was my first season of pro ball and everybody wanted me to win just because I was going up against the Yankees,” Papelbon recalled yesterday in the Bronx. “I was like, ‘Wow! I guess these people really care about beating the Yankees.’ ”
Also, at least we are not Dolphins fans.
