Another day, another epic

On the heels of last night's rollicking 11-inning affair, the Red Sox spent another two weeks playing the Yankees this afternoon.

Seriously, what is it about Yankees-Sox games that means they all have to take approximately a decade to complete?

A pitchers' duel was predicted, which, if you believe in Murphy's Law as much as I do, meant a track meet would be the actual result. And, in fact, that's what we got, with a 16-11 final score that had fans joking about kicking extra points on Twitter.

Offensively, it was Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek's turn to shine today. Once again, the Sox clawed their way back from a deficit - this one six runs as of the fourth inning - by way of the multi-run jack. Varitek hit just his third grand slam to pull the Sox back within a run in the fourth; another homer from Ellsbury tied the game at 6 in the next inning. Mike Lowell hit a homer to put the Sox back on top again, 12-10 in the bottom of the seventh.

What worries me about this pattern is that, as we've seen so far this season, an offense that relies on power hitters coming through for table-setters can be VERY feast or famine. We could be in for a lot of LOB this season.

But for this weekend, at least, we feast. On Yankees bullpen pitching, which they didn't think to spend any of that $423 million in free agency to improve.

A point which apparently didn't occur to Buck & McCarver, who kept harping on about the poor old Yankees and their bullpen woes.

What worries me about this pattern is that, as we've seen so far this season, an offense that relies on power hitters coming through for table-setters can be VERY feast or famine. We could be in for a lot of LOB this season.

But the thing is, we don't have just a few power guys on this team. Every guy batting 4 through 7 is a legitimate power threat, and right now, a pretty good OBP machine as well. Once the top of the order starts kicking into high gear, this offense will really start humming. . . .

Yeah, but don't be surprised when there are more weeks like the first week of this season, too. That's all I'm sayin'.
