Another bright spot in Wednesday's otherwise miserable game was the debut of Pawtucket star Will Middlebrooks, who filled in for an ailing Kevin Youkilis at third base. The kid was greeted warmly at Fenway, and returned the compliment by batting 1.000 (well, for a time, anyway) and stealing a base.
My first live game of the season Wednesday night basically amounted to three-plus hours of shivering and ill-timed Red Sox strikeouts, as the hometown team faltered through nine futile innings against the Oakland A's.
But there were some delightful aspects of this game, too, like the fact that every player on the field and in the dugout was decked out in stripey high socks as part of 1936 throwback uniforms, worn in honor of Jimmie Foxx's first season in the majors.
I've been trying desperately to come up with a set of entertaining excuses for why I haven't blogged in a ridiculous amount of time -- alien abduction being among my finalists -- but the sad and boring truth is that I've had a combination of technical and personal "issues" that have left me without the resources to blog since just before the July 4 holiday. A perfect storm of factors, you could say.
Anyway, for those who care, I thought I'd catch you up on some of where I've been and what I've been doing, in pictures, since I last blogged here...
I know it's been a while since I rapped at ya, to quote Onion scribe Jim Anchower, but I did attend one of the sweep games at the hands of the White Sox this week, the one that was probably in the most contention overall, on Tuesday night. I also had some great field box seats thanks to my Dad, right near the visitor's dugout, so I was able to get up close and personal with the inimitable Ozzie Guillen. It was a nice distraction from the debacle on the field.
A selection of photos from the complete set below the jump.
Still getting random ice cream headaches thinking about last night's awful outcome? Here, have some more photos...from the OTHER win so far this season. Oy. I think I need to go lie down.
However, I will first note that I am still accepting sponsorship offers for my attendance at Fenway for the rest of the season as good luck charm. I've been there for both of the games they've managed to pull out so far...
About 48 hours after Opening Day, it was back to the park with Sam to see Josh Beckett bitch-slap the Yankees. What outs there were aside from Ks of the variety that sent Josh a-swaggerin' off the field just like old times were mostly tough grounders hit in the vicinity of Dustin Pedroia.
In other words, it was as if the game had been designed with me in mind.
You don't want to think about these epically frustrating losses to the Rays the last two nights, do you? No! Of course not! Wouldn't it be nicer simply to savor the only two wins for the Sox so far this season -- the only two wins it feels, in moments like this, that they will ever have again?
Well, then, why not take a gander at these photos from Opening Day, here in Part 1, and the Sunday night game against the Yankees, in Part 2, that I've taken this freaking long to get processed been saving for just such an occasion?
